What can the Battle of Hastings teach us about climate change?

As part of a research assistantship with Environments of Change this year, I was tasked with producing a literature review of the physical site of Battle Abbey in East Sussex, with an eye to any research regarding the medieval environment. At first, I was dismayed that: every literature search just produced abundant articles on the infamous 1066 Battle of Hastings that took place at the Abbey site. As one of the most studied events in history, articles covering the battle’s events and aftermath far superseded research purely addressing the site itself.
