3D Scanning at Gravesend & Street House
In June of 2023 Dr. Stephen Sherlock led four students in a 3D Scanning project at Woodville Civic Centre in Gravesend, UK and Street House in Loftus, Yorkshire.
Gravesend, Kent, UK
In partnership with the Hands on Archaeology: Unearthing Gravesham’s Past project, students worked to create 3D scans of Roman and Anglo-Saxon artifacts unearthed from a high-status burial in Gravesheath. The goal of their work is to create replica items using a 3D printer to create objects the public can engage with physically. Our team invited members of the community to stop by to view the artifacts, watch as they are 3D scanned by our team, and to learn about the process of digitally reimagining historical artifacts.
Street House, Loftus, Yorkshire, UK
Street House is best known as the location of an Anglo-Saxon cemetery dating to the second half of the 7th century CE. Archeologists have found objects from the neolithic period, the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, and Early Medieval periods at this site. Recently, lead Archeologist Stephan Sherlock has found evidence of Early Neolithic salt production at the site. Our team started scanning some of the over 2500 objects found at the site.
