Water Management and Mapping in Montpellier

This project focuses on the climate and built environment of Medieval Montpellier and its Lagoonal Hinterland. The adjacent Languedoc coast hosts one of the largest European lagoons. The city of Roussillon is estimated to be 35,000 hectares compared to Venice at 42,000. This natural and cultural heritage is the result of a long history in which the city of Montpellier and the Lattes have played an important role. As with most places around the world, the transformation of this territory is the result of both the climate and human activity. It is the relationship between these that this project plans to study. Our research goals are: to know the territory over a long period of time, to visually represent changes to the environment, to consider vulnerabilities, and raise awareness of current risks.

We propose to examine the hydrographic metabolism of the Languedoc, the lower region between the Mediterranean and Montpellier. In doing this, we plan to increase the historical knowledge of climatic events, the evolution of the landscape, and to contribute to growing scholarship about the relationship between the medieval city and its environment.

The end of the Middle Ages is marked by a climate transition that led to the Little Ice Age. The Little Ice Age is an intense period of cooling and severe weather events which drew on government and urban resources to mitigate its effects on the landscape, infrastructure, and buildings.

Through geo-spatial technologies, it will be possible to reconstruct the landscape between Montpellier and its hinterland to establish how human activity change the environment. Through geo-referencing, we will reconstruct the lagoon and the surrounding environment up to the city using historical and natural sources. The use of both historical and geographic data will allow for a better interpretation of historical events and therefore a better understanding of the relationship between society and space in the medieval period.

The 3D component reconstructs a number of infrastructural elements including doors, bridges, and mills to be used for the interpretation of heritage for use in a mobile application ludo-touristique.

As part of the project Environnement, climat et espace à Montpellier et dans son arrière-pays lagunaire (XIII-XVIIe siècles,  medieval history specialist Professor Geneviève Dumas reproduced the medieval port of Lattes in 3D. This model is presented in a short animation in which we also see the Porte Lombarde, produced by artist Clara Gomiot.

Geneviève Dumas (Principal investigator) is a full professor of medieval history at the University of Shebrooke. She completed her doctoral dissertation at McGill University (Canada), under the supervision of Prof. Faith Wallis. She did her Habilitation à diriger des recherches (HDR) at the Université Paul Valéry in Montpellier, under the supervision of Patrick Gilli (UPVM3). Her book Santé et société à la fin du Moyen Âge was published by Brill in 2015. To date, she has received four government research grants to document various aspects of the history of Montpellier and its region: urban identity, public health, urban accounting, environment, and space.

Lucie Galano (Co-investigator) defended her PhD thesis in 2017 in joint supervision with Geneviève Dumas (UdeS) and Patrick Gilli (UPVM3) on the exploitation and development of the lagoon environment of Bas-Languedoc in the Middle Ages (11th-15th centuries). Since December 2017, she is an independent researcher and is attached to TESAM Her fields of research are mainly environmental history (exploitation, management of resources and development of natural environments), navigation and marketing networks in and around the eastern lower Languedoc.

Geneviève Dumas co-directed two doctoral theses, and several master's projects on Montpellier and its region. Among these students, some have made significant contributions to the Montpellier historiography.
