Bunce Island: Through the Mirror

The Bunce Island: Through the Mirror project is a repurposing of game technologies to develop an immersive, digital experience driven by scholarly research. Relying on an international network of scholarly collaborators and industry partners, with a robust student team from both Sierra Leone and from Kenya, this project is framed within an approach of community-based co-authorship and frames African narratives and traditions. The project is not only interdisciplinary, relying on expertise around the world in many elements and aspects of the historical West African coastline, but intersectoral, working in close collaboration with Jiwe Studio, a game developer in Nairobi, Kenya. It is our intention to disrupt existing paradigms of how history is taught, and to bring African stories to a wider audience of learners, Afro-descendants, and scholars alike.
